Job Summary
The Duke Inpatient Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) delivers comprehensive, high-quality care to neurosurgical patients of all ages in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting. Working closely with attending physicians, fellows, residents, and fellow APPs, the APP is responsible for a broad range of clinical tasks including physical examinations, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, care coordination, and direct patient care. This role offers a dynamic opportunity to contribute to excellence in clinical care, teaching, and organizational leadership.

No Operating Room or On-Call Responsibilities
Care Across the Neurosurgical Spectrum: Tumor, Spine, and Neurovascular
Covers Both Adult and Pediatric Patient Populations
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct and document comprehensive physical exams and assessments
Order and interpret diagnostic tests and lab studies
Prescribe medications and develop care plans
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for coordinated care delivery
Participate in clinical education and quality improvement initiatives
Perform bedside procedures (including but not limited to)
Lumbar Puncture
Lumbar Drain management
Shunt flow study
Shunt adjustment
Wound closure
Shunt / Reservoir Tap
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
NP: Graduate of DNP or MSN Nurse Practitioner program for acute care adult and pediatric care.
PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant program
Licensure
NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP.
PA: Current unrestricted license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA.
Certification
NP: Dual certification required in both Adult Acute Care and Pediatrics or Family Medicine, i.e., ACNP or AGACNP + FNP or PNP
PA: PA-C
Experience
One year APP experience is preferred but not required.
Job Hours
FOURTEEN 12-hour shifts per month. This role is a primary DAY shift position with 2 months of night coverage per year (on average). Night coverage includes a supplemental incentive for off shift work.
Day shifts (530am-530pm).
Night shifts (530pm - 530am)
Schedule may be changed by administrative or clinical leadership to meet department needs.
