Christiana Care is recruiting for a Phlebotomy Specialist to work part time, 40 hours bi-weekly. This position is located at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center located in Newark, Delaware. The position is five / 8 hour shifts in a two week period. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Primary Function:
As the Phlebotomy Specialist, you will interview, register, order and perform laboratory tests along with processing patient specimens on outpatients at the Outreach Laboratory site.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform successful venipuncture, micro-procedure and bleeding times using established procedures on adult and pediatric patients
- Interview and register outpatients accurately in the HIS
- Properly label and process patient specimens prior to arrival in clinical laboratory
- Interpret physician's orders in an accurate manner
- Follow-up with physician's office to clarify any confusion or question, including resolution of any medical necessity and/or diagnosis issues
- Handle all telephone requests in a courteous manner, documenting the call
- Select correct encounter and orders laboratory tests accurately in the LIS
- Plate patient specimens for microbiology cultures
- Transport patient specimens to clinical laboratory as necessary
- Perform Point of Care Testing (POCT) on Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) patients
- Maintain daily log sheets
- Maintain supplies and adequate inventory of medications
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Successful completion of a Phlebotomy Training Program required; or at least one year of comparable phlebotomy experience
- Experience required in the following: performing phlebotomy procedures including venipuncture, finger and heel stick
- Experience with patient registration and test order entry
- Experience and understanding of insurances
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- BLS (CPR) Certification required; or must obtain within 60 days of hire
