Our lab uses multidisciplinary approaches to investigate the role of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors on disease etiology. Multidisciplinary approaches include use of genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, biomedical informatics and causal inference methods to understand mechanisms involved in disease causation.
A key mission of the our lab is to advance women's health research by applying these multidisciplinary approaches. Current research projects focus on developing a better understanding of causes and consequences relating to pregnancy complications including gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. The laboratory also contributes to complementary research projects involving metabolic, vascular, renal and musculoskeletal conditions in men and women.
We are seeking a staff scientist with a PhD in Epidemiology, Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, or related field. The candidate must have excellent organization skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines in a timely manner. Applicants with demonstrated ability and/or desire to work across multiple areas of health and disease are preferred, as are applicants capable of and enthusiastic about synthesizing evidence and viewpoints from epidemiology with an eye towards causal inference, genetics, biology, and clinical medicine.
The staff scientist will be responsible for tracking, supervising and leading projects related to, but not limited to, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, cardiovascular and renal conditions, and musculoskeletal disorders. This position provides the opportunity to work with projects involving big-data: electronic health records (EHR) and linked genetic data from multiple sources including BioVU, UKBiobank, Million Veteran Program, and involves collaborating with multiple large genetic consortia.

Expected Responsibilities:
Independently oversee research projects and perform near to totally independent research.
Supervise, plan, design and implement research projects
Establish highly complex protocol(s); define data collection, evaluation, and analysis procedures
Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop methods and procedures for operation of complex scientific equipment
Supervise set-up and operation of various scientific experiments
Contribute to research so as to merit serving as author or co-author on research publications, etc.
Assist Principal Investigator (PI) in writing research grants and contract proposals
Assists PI in manuscript preparation for scientific journals.
Present research findings as needed
Responsible for plan and coordination of literature and library searches and data collection programs
Develop reports of results, graphs, charts, tables, etc. of research findings
Supervise and lead writing, reviewing and editing of various materials for publication
Provide supervisory responsibility to staff.
Work with and direct data-analysts and programmers to generate scripts and analysis pipelines for reproducible research.
Mentor and teach graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in developing their projects and on specific techniques and protocols.
Train and supervise technical staff, medical and graduate students
Provide technical guidance to students, pos-doctoral fellows and faculty as required
May provide budget responsibility
Make recommendations to PI regarding staff, supply and equipment needs for research projects
May monitor expenditures of funds
Maintain open communication between department and others
Open contact as needed with principal investigator, collaborating professionals, Purchasing, Human Resource Services, Space and Facilities Planning, asset management personnel, Environmental Health and Safety, Institutional Review Board staff, administrative staff relating to budget capabilities
Contact as required with sponsoring agencies and/or cooperating facilities (e.g. V.A.), collaborating professionals and vendors
