GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Surgical Assistant II (SAII) works under supervision of the professional nurse, assisting in performing specific duties and activities for surgical patients of all age groups. This includes all duties of the SA I. The SA II is an advanced ancillary role in which the employee has completed additional training and maintains competency in additional role specific related duties. The Surgical Assistant II applies knowledge of aseptic technique and basic supplies and equipment utilized for surgical procedures. Adheres to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Demonstrates through behavior Florida Hospital’s core values of Integrity, Compassion, Balance, Excellence, Stewardship and Teamwork.
· Ensures safe transport, transfer, and positioning of patients utilizing good body mechanics. Maintains patient privacy and dignity at all times. Adheres to policies related to patient identification and confidentiality. Applies knowledge of surgical specialty positioning equipment and ensures equipment is available for procedures.
· Participates in the preparation of the patient for procedures as directed by RN. Cooperates as part of the multidisciplinary team by communicating pertinent patient information to the RN and completing delegated duties as directed. Monitors cases to ensure all infection control measures are met by correctly opening sterile supplies, identifying breaks in sterile technique and taking immediate corrective action when such breaks occur.
· Maintains knowledge of instrumentation, equipment, and supplies needed for procedures so that case picking and preparation can be done accurately and completely.
· Functions in the role of retractor, camera, or limb holder at the sterile field under the direction of the RN, Scrub Tech, and / or Surgeon.
· Ensures appropriate disposition of supplies, labs, and specimens. Participates in hand off communication and verification process for specimens with laboratory personnel. May remove medications from the pneumatic tube system for immediate delivery to the RN or for securing purposes in the medication room. Ensures linens, scrubs, and other supplies are stocked and maintained. Completes duties within assigned timeframes.
· Efficient and organized in skills to assist team with safe and appropriate turnovers. Utilizes knowledge of cleaning protocols for all types of specialty surgical equipment. Articulates department goals and metrics for first cases starts and turnover times and contributes ideas for improvement. Readily available to perform all duties.
· Promotes a safe environment. Tackles appropriate action in emergency situations, maintaining awareness and control of hazards which may endanger patients, visitors and employees, identifies and reports environmental concerns to the management team. Ensures adherence to appropriate regulatory standards and Florida Hospital policy and procedure.
· Follows CDC isolation guidelines, demonstrates appropriate use of PPE, performs handwashing according to policy and enforces safety regulations. Strictly adheres to all infection control practices. Applies knowledge of bloodborne pathogens and practices for safe handling. Maintains knowledge of waste stream processes and appropriate disposal of surgical waste. Ensures disposal containers are correctly labeled to meet regulatory standards.

QualificationsKNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
· Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
· Knowledge of sterile technique and operating room environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· High School Diploma or GED
· Previous experience in an acute care hospital setting.
· PCT experience (dependent on role)
· Experience working with patients in an acute care setting.
