The Registered Nurse, Wound Ostomy, applies the nursing process to plan, implement, document, and evaluate the care of patients including patient and family education and the continuum of care planning. The Registered Nurse effectively communicates with the patient/family and the health care team to ensure effective outcomes. Provide high level, evidence-based direct care as a WOCN in the assessment and management of a range of conditions involving the integumentary, gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems including but not limited to acute and chronic wounds, pressure injuries, ostomies, fistulas, tubes, and moisture associated skin damage. Collaborate discharge planning needs with the multidisciplinary team. Recommend appropriate wound dressings and performs conservative sharp wound debridement as indicated. Provide direct care and patient and staff education related to the prevention of skin breakdown. Collaborate with other departments to provide staff education, best practice guidelines, and product selection in alignment with VUMC pillar goals. Collect data for necessary reports and records. Participate in research and clinical studies. Participate in development /review of practice protocols and guidelines.
$15,000 SIgn On Bonus for eligible full tIme new hires paid at 60 days of employment. Rehires who have worked for VUMC in a full time job in the past year would not be eligible for the signing bonus. PRN and full time rehires are eligible for the bonus after the 1 year waiting period
The Wound, Ostomy, Continence (WOC) Nurses provide research based, best-practice care to adult patients in the hospital and outpatient clinic settings. We are a tertiary care provider receiving patients from a 200+ mile radius. We provide specialized care for a very large ostomy patient population that includes 10-15 new ostomy surgery patients per week. We provide outpatient services in our Ostomy Clinic (Mon-Fri) for pre and postoperative teaching and ostomy related problems both physical and emotional. We play an integral role in the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries (ulcers) and also provide topical management recommendations for other types of skin integrity issues including skin tears, lower extremity wounds, and moisture associated skin damage. We precept WOCN students from certified programs as well as from local nursing schools and provide formal and informal educational in-services to unit staff, orientation groups, and others. While each WOC Nurse functions autonomously, we are very team focused not only in our department but in coordination and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. We are well respected by other health team members and are considered experts in our field.
