The Inova Health System is seeking an experienced surgeon for the Division Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery position. The Division Chief reports to the President of the Service Line and works closely with other Division Chiefs and key organizational stakeholders to advance high level patient centered care across Inova. Opportunity will require clinical and non-clinical skill sets for direction of system wide program as Chief of Acute Care Surgery and Medical Director of the Inova Level 1 Trauma center. Clinical responsibilities will include practice of acute care surgery at the Inova Fairfax medical Campus (IFMC) supporting the Level 1 trauma center, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care. Participation in the Inova general surgery resident program and UVA medical student education is an expectation. Core responsibilities will include:
  • Establish standards and metric necessary to collaboratively drive outcomes in safety, quality and experience
  • Build and actuate care models that achieve a seamless system of care through reduction of variation across the system
  • Contribute to the development of the Division and Service Line through definition and development of clinical capabilities
  • Establish the criteria and qualifications to be a member of the Division
  • Assist in the recruitment and training of highly qualified providers
  • Participate in the identification, evaluation and implementation of growth strategies
  • Assist in operating the Division and Service Line in a judicious, transparent and sustainable fashion
  • Ensure all regulatory, compliance and certification standards are met for the program

In partnership with the Service Line and other leaders, the Division Chief will:
  • Assist in the supervision of the business manager and administrative leads for each of the Division's clinical, educational and research areas
  • Oversee the physicians and physician extenders providing clinical services
  • Oversee the preparation of the annual reports including budgetary planning and performance evaluation of medical providers
  • Ensure that physicians and physician extenders meet Division and Service Line clinical practice goals and metrics

We are an ACS COT-verified Level 1 Trauma Center that serves Northern Virginia (catchment area of approximately 3 million people). In 2019, the Trauma Acute Care Surgery team treated and/or evaluated approximately 2,200 trauma patients and 2,200 acute care surgery patients . Our practice includes:

  • A busy clinical trauma practice of predominantly blunt etiology with in-house attending coverage
  • A Surgical Critical Care Service providing around the clock in-house coverage for an 18-bed ICU
  • A busy Emergency General Surgery practice
  • Elective general surgery practice
  • Active teaching responsibilities through our general surgery residency program and affiliation with medical schools
  • Surgical Critical Care Fellowship
  • Advanced Practice Provider support for the teams
  • A mature clinical research program
  • Participation in community outreach, education and injury prevention


The administrative leadership role this opportunity would coordinate and manage for Acute Care Surgery across the 5 hospital health system. Team building and management through collaboration with employed and independent practice surgeons will be required. Oversight, practice pattern development across the system for emergency general surgery, surgical critical care and trauma will be involved. The Inova Fairfax medical campus (IFMC) houses the only Level 1 trauma center with regional support from Inova Loudoun Hospital level 3 trauma center and future system hospital plans. The clinical demand across the region is high and the Inova Health system emergency departments sees approximately 2,200 trauma patients and 2,200 emergency general surgery patients yearly.
